Brandon Aiyuk — WR, SF — 2026 evaluation
Verdict
AVOID (high confidence) at ADP 143.7 (FFC PPR, 2026-07-07). Aiyuk is on the reserve/left squad list, has not played a snap since tearing his ACL+MCL in October 2024, and on 2026-07-07 publicly refused to file for reinstatement — the one procedural step that would let SF release or trade him ("will not be reinstating with them or ever doing any kind of business with them" — NBC Sports PFT / 49ers Webzone, 2026-07-07). Without reinstatement he cannot be released, traded, signed elsewhere, or paid; SF has abandoned trade efforts and Washington's interest has waned (team profile, sources 2026-07-02 → 07-07). Why the market is wrong: pick 143.7 is stale name-value pricing of the 2023 WR1 plus a hoped-for release — but the freshest reporting says the release mechanism is the exact thing Aiyuk refuses to trigger, so the median outcome at that pick is 0.0 PPR points. This is AVOID, not FADE: the risk is thesis-breaking at any realistic redraft cost, and in a deep-pool hunt that 12th-round pick buys a player with a live path to a role. This is a roster-status verdict (evidence hierarchy level 1–2); no stat argument enters into it.
Deep-pool screens applied: fails every one. Post-hype screen requires "role newly open" — he has no role and no path to one. Pedigree (R1 #25, 2020 — PFR) is void under the decay rule (year-7 player; believe the NFL record, and the NFL record since Oct 2024 is zero snaps). Age 28 (born 1998-03-17 — Sleeper 2026-07-07), NFL season 7, approaching the WR-30 decline window with two lost seasons of rust.
Bull case
- The pre-injury player was real: 21.8% TS and 75-1342-7 in 2023 (team profile, computed 2026-07-07); he's 28, not 32, and CBS's 2026 outlook concedes "if he's healthy, Aiyuk can still be a fantasy starter" — the talent is not the problem.
- The blocker is paperwork plus pride, not medicine: filing for reinstatement is a procedural step, SF has said he will not play for them (so release/trade would follow a filing quickly), and the most-reported landing spot — Washington with ASU teammate Jayden Daniels — would be a genuinely useful fantasy home (ESPN/SI, 2026 offseason).
- At pick 143.7 the real-world cost is one bench spot; in deep-bench or best-ball formats, any pre-September resolution would instantly create WR3-priced-as-WR55 value.
Bear case
- On 2026-07-07 he refused the only mechanism that gets him off reserve/left squad — "will not be reinstating with them or ever doing any kind of business with them" (NBC Sports PFT / 49ers Webzone, 7/7). No reinstatement → no release, no trade, no pay, no football. The one thing that would force SF's hand is the one thing he says he won't do.
- He hasn't played since October 2024 (ACL+MCL): 0 snaps in 2025, 25-374-0 in his last 7 games in 2024, a 20+ month layoff, reportedly no agent, and a public feud that has actively cooled suitor interest (SI, 2026; team profile: WAS interest waned as of 2026-07-02). Even the best case is a mid-season signing learning a new offense on a surgically repaired knee.
- The money fight ($27M guarantees voided; $13.8–18.4M recoupment pursuit — ProFootballRumors/SF Standard, July 2026) means both sides are litigating, not negotiating — the dispute can consume the entire 2026 season, and drafters at 143.7 are paying for a resolution neither side is moving toward.
Projection & comps
| Floor (20th) | Median (50th) | Ceiling (80th) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| PPR points | 0 | 0 | 60 |
Not built bottom-up — per the instruction not to force a projection for a player with no roster path. Probability he plays meaningful 2026 snaps is judged at roughly 15–25% (requires him to reverse a publicly stated position, then reinstatement → release/trade → signing → post-20-month-layoff ramp). The strict 80th-percentile outcome is approximately 0; the 60-point ceiling represents the boundary branch: reinstates late summer/early fall, is released (SF has said he will not play for them — ESPN offseason coverage, 2026), signs (WAS was the most-reported suitor before interest waned), and produces ~8 games at 7–8 PPR PPG as a post-ACL WR3/4 in a new offense. Games-played risk: high (definitionally).
Comp seasons (shape, not stats): Le'Veon Bell 2018 (holdout, 0 games); Trent Williams 2019 (refused to play for the team amid a dispute, 0 games, resurfaced elsewhere the next year); OBJ 2022 (post-ACL, unsigned all season, 0 games — his 2023 BAL 35-565-3 return is the ceiling-branch shape a year later); Melvin Gordon 2019 (reversal branch — returned Week 5 to diminished efficiency). No external projection consulted; data/projections/ not populated for him.

Reference point pre-injury: 2023 Aiyuk led SF WRs at 21.8% TS (REG+POST) with 75-1342-7 — a real X/Z alpha in the Shanahan tree (team profile tendency table, computed 2026-07-07). That player has not been seen since.
Context (from data/team-profiles/SF.md, built/refreshed 2026-07-07)
- He is off the 2026 SF picture. The team profile treats him as vacating nothing (0 targets in 2025) and instructs evals to treat him as off the roster for projection purposes. SF voided his $27M in 2026 guarantees and may pursue $13.8–18.4M in signing-bonus recoupment; the financial war gives SF no incentive to free him and gives him a grievance timeline that can outlast the season.
- The WR room replaced him: Mike Evans (X/WR1, 3-yr $42.4M), Christian Kirk (primary slot), R2 #33 De'Zhaun Stribling, plus Pearsall at Z. Even a fantasy-fiction reconciliation would return him to a full room in an offense whose target tree runs through CMC (30.5% RB+FB target share in 2025) and where no WR has cleared ~22% TS in three years.
- The context section is otherwise moot: play-caller (Shanahan, 10th yr), QB (Purdy, healthy), OL (4/5 returning) are all irrelevant to a player who is not on the field and, per his own statement, never will be for this team.
Tripwires (re-run this eval immediately on any of these)
- Aiyuk files for reinstatement with the NFL.
- SF releases or trades him (any transaction-wire movement).
- He signs with any team → full re-eval from the new role, new team profile.
- A grievance/settlement ruling changes his contract or roster status.
- Credible reports of medical clearance + team workouts (signal a staged return).
