2025 context: 8-9, won the NFC South (first division title since 2015), lost the wild-card game at home to the Rams (Heavy/NBC Sports, as-of 2026-07-07).

Play-caller

• Calls plays: Brad Idzik (OC) — confirmed. HC Dave Canales, who called plays in 2024–2025, handed play-calling to Idzik for 2026 (Panthers.com, 2026-02-24; ESPN, Feb 2026). First-time NFL play-caller (only preseason games previously) → coaching-change protocol (methodology §9) applies.
• Tenure with team: 3rd year as CAR OC (2024–), age 34; came with Canales from Tampa Bay. Prior relationship with QB1: 2 years as Young's OC; described by Canales as the "primary architect" of the offense (Panthers.com, 2026-02-24). Darrell Bevell added as assistant HC/offensive specialist and Carl Smith as senior consultant to support the transition (Panthers.com/NBC Sports, Feb 2026).

Read: Expect continuity of the Canales system Idzik co-authored — run-tilted (bottom-5 PROE), slow-volume (61 plays/gm), heavy-personnel-friendly (12/13/21/22 combined ~32%), with a moderate play-action rate — but every tendency is low-confidence because Idzik has never called a regular-season game. Per §9 expect a first-year install drag (slower pace, conservative scripts early, drifting toward true tendencies by midseason), and treat any 2025 manufactured/schemed roles as void until re-established. The roster nudge is upward on pass rate: Young is entering year 4 off a career year, McMillan/Coker are ascending, and the FA additions (Metchie) are pass-catchers.

QB situation

• QB1: Bryce Young — fifth-year option for 2027 ($25.904M) exercised late April 2026 (Heavy/Yahoo, April 2026); career-year 2025: 3,011 yds, 23 TD, 11 INT, 63.6% comp in 16 games (passing.csv 2025; SI). Benching risk: none (option picked up, division title, extension talks open per GM Dan Morgan).
• Backup: Kenny Pickett — signed 1-yr deal March 2026 (Spotrac lists 1 yr/$4M fully gtd; NBC/Wikipedia reported up to $7.5M — exact value contested). Andy Dalton traded to PHI for a 2027 7th (March 18, 2026, Yahoo/Panthers.com). Tier B: functional former starter; offense compresses (−aDOT, more screens/checkdowns).
• Contingency line: If Young misses time: Pickett, tier B — expect ~3–5% pass-rate cut, lower aDOT, McMillan's deep/intermediate volume hurt most; Coker/slot/RB checkdown work holds best; already-run-tilted offense leans further run.

O-line

• Projected starters LT–RT: Ikem Ekwonu (INJURY FLAG — torn patellar tendon in the Jan 2026 playoff loss, timeline uncertain; Rasheed Walker signed 1-yr as insurance, R1 pick Monroe Freeling also available) — Damien Lewis — Luke Fortner (new; FA ex-JAX per ESPN depth chart, contract terms UNVERIFIED; R5.144 C Sam Hecht behind him) — Robert Hunt — Taylor Moton (re-signed 2 yr/$44M, $40M gtd, through 2027; AP/FOX, March 2026). Departed: Austin Corbett (BUF, 3/26), Cade Mays (DET 3 yr/$25M), Yosh Nijman (retired 3/11) — the entire 2025 center rotation is gone.
• Interior vs edge: 2025 unit was bottom-10 in both phases (23rd PBWR / 28th RBWR / 29th pressure allowed) and now turns over the pivot to Fortner — interior is the concern: a shaky new center + 28th-ranked run blocking caps RB efficiency and threatens the deep game if pressure comes up the middle. Tackles are the relative strength when Ekwonu is healthy (Moton steady, R1 capital added at OT); if Ekwonu misses time, edge protection degrades to Walker/rookie Freeling and the offense compresses to quick game.

Scheme family

• Run scheme: outside-zone/duo mix from the Canales Seattle/Tampa lineage, with heavy-personnel (12/13/21/22 ~32% combined in 2025, participation.csv) downhill elements — fits one-cut zone runners (Hubbard's profile) and satellite space backs (Brooks); AJ Dillon imported for the short-yardage/duo role.
• Pass-game family: West Coast timing base with Shanahan-adjacent play-action/boundary shot elements (Canales tree; Idzik retained). Implications: mid aDOT, PA-fed intermediate work for the X (McMillan), modest slot volume in a 55% 11-personnel offense — WR3/slot snaps are gated by the heavy-personnel usage, so the slot job is real but not high-volume.

RB committee split: early-down: Hubbard (established starter — beat reporting, May–June 2026) · passing-down: Hubbard, with Brooks the ascending claim as the "wildcard" space back — CONTESTED · goal-line: Dillon's stated role ("bruising short-yardage back"), Hubbard keeps a share — CONTESTED. Etienne is the returner/RB4. Dowdle's 236 vacated carries mostly consolidate to Hubbard, with Brooks' health the swing variable on the passing-down share.

• Runs the defense: Ejiro Evero (DC) — confirmed; interviewed for HC jobs (Raiders twice, Falcons, Steelers), didn't land one, returns on an extension through 2027 signed Jan 2026 (Panthers.com, 2026-01-11).
• Tenure with team: 4th season as CAR DC (hired 2023) · New DC: no (dc_new: false) — continuity green flag: same DC ≥2 yrs.
• Front/scheme family: 3-4 base / odd front, Fangio-tree two-high shell (Evero's Rams/Broncos lineage); 2025 charting confirms the zone-heavy split-safety profile.

• Key defensive arrivals/departures: ARR — Jaelan Phillips, EDGE, 4 yr/$120M ($80M gtd; NFL.com/Spotrac, March 2026) — the premium-edge move dst.md §3 flags as worth +2–4 pts of pressure rate on a unit that badly needs it; Devin Lloyd, ILB, 3 yr/$45M (off-ball — minor fantasy signal); R2.49 DT Lee Hunter, R4.129 CB Will Lee III, R5.151 S Zakee Wheatley. Read: A zone-heavy (78%) two-high Fangio-tree defense that was good on the scoreboard (22.35 PA/g, 21 takeaways — def_summary.csv) despite a bottom-tier 15.5% pressure rate — the Phillips signing is a direct attempt to fix the one broken input, and it's the swing variable on the whole DST profile. Opposing option-route slots and YAC profiles get the usual zone-heavy upgrade; man-beating iso X receivers don't face Horn all game because he stays sides-locked.

Stability & change log

• Stability: low — reasoning per methodology §10: first-time play-caller (Idzik) is an automatic low, compounded by an unresolved WR3/slot battle and a contested RB passing-down role; the mitigants (same HC/system 3rd yr, same QB1 with option exercised, 4 of 5 OL returning) keep this a "high-end low," but evals should treat all tendency-based projections as low-confidence until Idzik shows real-game tendencies.
• Watch items: (1) Ekwonu's patellar-tendon rehab — miss time → Walker/Freeling at LT, downgrade the whole pass game; (2) McMillan's foot/ankle at camp open 7/22 — lingering = pecking-order tripwire; (3) WR3 battle Legette vs Metchie vs Brazzell (incl. possible Legette trade); (4) Brooks' knee through camp — a setback re-consolidates the committee to Hubbard, a strong camp erodes Hubbard's passing-down work; (5) new center Fortner vs R5 Hecht; (6) any midseason report of Canales taking back play-calling.
